My Journey of Encouraging Active Exploration

Sneha Arvind

Arjun gardening

As an Indian mother, I've always believed in the importance of balancing the digital world with the wonders of the real world and nature. In today's age of screens and virtual experiences, my journey to encourage my child, Arjun, to be more hands-on in the real world and embrace the beauty of nature has been a rewarding adventure.

The Digital Age Challenge

Growing up in the digital age, Arjun was naturally drawn to screens, from cartoons on TV to games on tablets. While I recognised the educational value of technology, I also wanted to ensure that he experienced the joy of active play, outdoor exploration, and the profound connection with nature.

Discovering the Great Outdoors

Our journey began by discovering the great outdoors right in our neighbourhood. We explored nearby parks, where Arjun had the freedom to run, jump, and climb to his heart's content. These outings fostered his love for the open spaces and provided him with the physical activity he needed.

Creating a Nature Haven

We transformed a corner of our home into a nature haven. Arjun helped plant flowers and herbs, and we observed the magic of growth together. It not only taught him about responsibility but also connected him to the beauty of the natural world right in our backyard.

Family Adventure Expeditions

Weekends became a time for family adventure expeditions. We embarked on nature trails, where Arjun's curiosity came alive. He eagerly followed butterfly trails, identified local birds, and collected leaves and pebbles, turning each hike into an exciting treasure hunt.

Involving in Gardening

Arjun's involvement in gardening deepened. He took charge of watering our plants, learned about soil, and discovered the patience required for nurturing life. The joy on his face when he saw his first sunflower bloom was priceless.

Connecting with Community

We also connected with like-minded parents in our community, organising outdoor playdates and picnics. These gatherings not only allowed Arjun to make friends but also provided him with a supportive network of families who valued outdoor play and nature.

Embracing Hands-On Learning

I encouraged hands-on learning experiences. We built birdhouses, experimented with simple science projects, and created art inspired by nature. These activities not only sparked Arjun's creativity but also reinforced the idea that learning can be fun and engaging outside the classroom.

The Transformative Journey

Our journey to encourage Arjun to be more active in the real world and embrace nature has been transformative. He has developed a profound connection with the environment, a love for physical activity, and a curiosity about the world around him. Most importantly, he has learned to appreciate the beauty of simplicity, whether it's the rustling of leaves in the wind or the feel of cool soil in his hands.

Conclusion

As an Indian mother, I believe in nurturing the holistic development of my child, and our journey toward encouraging active exploration and nature appreciation has been an enriching one. Arjun has grown into a well-rounded individual who cherishes the world beyond screens, values the importance of physical activity, and is deeply connected to the natural world. In a digital age, it's our role as parents to guide our children toward a balanced and fulfilling life—one that includes the timeless joys of active play, outdoor adventures, and a profound love for nature.
